Teens And Lying - Why teens usually lie ? |
|
If you are in charge of raising a teenager you have probably noticed that your teenager has been lying profusely about his or her recent activities and whereabouts. It is natural for teenagers to avoid talking to their parents about their personal issues. Of course, if a teenager refuses to talk to you about his personal life you won’t be able to provide him with any useful advice. Compulsive lying in teenagers can be cured if you establish a strong honest relationship with the teenager. It can be quite difficult to get your teenager to discuss his or her problems with you freely. However, the points outlined in this article will help you establish an honest open relationship with your teenager which will encourage him to stop lying all together.
First, you need to put yourself into the teenager’s shoes – see the world from his viewpoint. You should also avoid getting angry when the teenager admits that he did something wrong. If you do get angry every time your teenager speaks freely with you he will avoid talking to you in the future. Teen lying can be cured if you learn that your teenager needs to feel comfortable talking to you. In order to help a teenager feel comfortable with you it would help if you could relate to him in some way. Think back on the days when you used to be a teenager and share some of the stories of your rebellious antics. Once the teenager feels comfortable with you he will open up and share his true feelings and thoughts.
Of course, it takes time to build a strong honest relationship with your teenager. Teen lying cannot be cured in a matter of days. It can take years to build an honest open relationship with your teenager – yet compulsive lying in teenagers can be cured if you remain calm and provide advice for the teenager when he comes to you with a problem that he can’t solve on his own. You can’t predict how a teenager will behave but if you reward positive behavior and punish negative behavior over time your teenager will learn to understand what to do and what not to do.
You need to understand that puberty is a difficult time for the teenager – his or her feelings will be more sensitive and if you do something to offend the teenager (e.g. lose your temper) he could block you out of his life forever.
